This is Personal

This body of work has grown out of an investigation into memory and what it means to remember. We all hold memories which can return us in an instant, with varying intensity, to a specific place and time. These memories help shape our sense of self and our physical identity.

 

‘This is Personal’ is a series that uses layering of oil paint and drawing media over paper collage to explore the depth, complexity and sometimes transience of personal memories. In each, whilst the figure (the ‘self’) is prominent, they remain featureless, allowing the viewer to reflect and connect with their own memories evoked by each image or its title. It is for this reason that the paintings are signed on the reverse and not on the front. Memories are highly personal and individual: is not my place to put my name to under those memories.
